13 Popular Movies That Are Almost Considered Porn

Only a few movies ever try to push the boundaries. Whether it is in a good or bad direction is up to you. But, when it comes to the flicks on our list, no one will deny that they are almost pornographic. Let’s get into it!

Shame (2011)

“Shame” is a psychological drama by Steve McQueen. The lead role went to Michael Fassbender, who plays a sex addict. There are a lot of explicit sex scenes in the movie, and it tried to depict addiction as realistically as possible. That also meant an easy NC-17 rating in the U.S.

Oh, and did we mention that Fassbender and Carey Mulligan’s characters are siblings?

Basic Instinct (1992)

It is nearly impossible that you haven’t seen “Basic Instinct” (or at least parts of it). The movie is an erotic thriller starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone. If you are not aware, it is the movie with the famous chair scene where Sharon Stone crosses her legs, showing that she isn’t wearing any panties. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks to its many sex scenes, the flick won itself an R rating.

Last Tango In Paris (1973)

“Last Tango in Paris” is an erotic drama by Bertolucci. The movie stars Marlon Brando, Maria Schneider, and Jean-Pierre Léaud. It follows a story of a widowed American that starts an anonymous relationship with a French woman.

While the movie is a cult classic today, no one dreamed of how successful it would become, especially if you consider that it came out with an R rating. The reason why this movie is on the verge of pornography is due to numerous sex scenes, including a controversial one featuring rape. Needless to say, the sex scenes in the movie are not real, but they still had a negative effect on Schneider and her career.

Good Luck Chuck (2007)

“Good Luck Chuck” is a romantic comedy starring Jessica Alba and Dane Cook. The story of the movie, however, is unlike the majority of romcoms you’ve seen so far. It tells a story about women finding one true love after having sex with the protagonist Chuck (Dane Cook).

Everything changes when Chuck meets Cam (Jessica Alba) and falls for her. While the plot of the movie sounds PG, in reality, the sex scenes involve a lot of nudity. Of course, the private parts are not visible, but there are a lot of boobs that saved this movie a spot on our list.

Showgirls (1995)

“Showgirls” is another erotic drama, this time by Paul Verhoeven. The story follows a girl trying to find her way to fame. She goes from being a stripper to become a showgirl in Las Vegas.

The movie is full of sexual encounters, nudity, and violence, which is why it saw the light of day as one of many NC-17 movies in the U.S. Thanks to its rating, the movie failed to earn a lot of money, and it bombed in theatres. Eventually, the movie managed to profit thanks to home release and video rentals.

The Fifty Shades Of Grey Series (2015–2018)

It is nearly impossible to find someone unaware of the whole “Fifty Shades” controversy. The trilogy was based on the book series of the same name, and it follows a girl discovering the world of BDSM

The controversy behind the flick made it even more successful, and it managed to become the seventh highest-grossing franchise of all time. (Naturally, only counting movies with an R rating.) While some people claim that the movie portrays the whole BDSM culture inaccurately, it didn’t stop people from wanting to check out the newest controversial movie.

And if you are not aware, the movie is full of sex scenes, and it is quite close to being softcore porn.

Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 (2013)

“Nymphomaniac” is a two-part erotic film by Lars Von Trier, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg. As you can probably guess from the title, the protagonist of the movie is a nymphomaniac, and the movie follows her adventures.

The original idea was for it to be one movie, but due to its length, they had to cut it. Whether you think that this movie is a piece of art or not, there is no denying that it is basically a porn movie. The scenes are explicit, and you can see everything.

Boogie Nights (1997)

“Boogie Nights” is a period drama set in Los Angeles. It follows a story of a young dishwasher who decides to seek another career. His career of choice is to become a porn star, and the movie is set in the Golden Age of Porn.

The film offers an impressive cast with talented actors like Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Burt Raynolds, Philip Seymor Hoffman, and many others. As you can guess already, it’s ripe with nudity and sex scenes, and a few of them are quite explicit. It’s no wonder why “Boogie Nights” are so close to being porn.

Antichrist (2009)

Another movie by Lars Von Trier means another porn. Here, we have a psychological horror movie that has a lot of explicit sex for some reason. The movie follows a couple who retreat to a cabin after the death of their child. At one point, the man (Willem Dafoe) starts experiencing visions, while his wife (Charlotte Gainsbourg) becomes violent and horny.

Naturally, the majority of scenes are done with prosthetics and body doubles, but the movie is still one step away from porn.

365 Days (2020)

“365 Days” is a Polish erotic drama based on the first book in the trilogy by Blanka Lipińska. She admitted that the primary inspiration for her books was the “Fifty Shades” series, which is quite obvious if you saw the movie.

The story follows a young woman from Poland falling for a man from Sicily. The dominant man imprisons her at one point, hoping that she would fall in love with him. While the movie became rather popular, the critics and reception weren’t as gentle. The main problem was that it romanticized rape and kidnapping.

Love (2015)

“Love” is an erotic drama by Gaspar Noé. The movie follows a college student and his sexual relationship. Since it is a drama movie, there is a lot of breaking up, stress, and all the similar things you can imagine.

The reason why this movie is on the list is due to the fact that it has unsimulated sex. While the majority of movies showing sex scenes are just acting (with socks and props), here we get to see real shagging. But hey, the movie was at Cannes, which means it’s not porn, right?

Blue Is The Warmest Color (2013)

“Blue is the Warmest Color” is a French movie by Abdellatif Kechinche. It follows a story of a young woman Adèle played by Adèle Exarchopoulos, and her discovery of freedom and desire. The movie drew inspiration from the graphic novel of the same name, and it is bursting with sex and eroticism.

But explicit nudity was not the only controversy that followed the release. Namely, many participants were quite dissatisfied with poor working conditions and harassment.

Newness (2017)

The final entry on the list is “Newness” by Drake Doremus. It is a romantic drama that follows Nicholas Hoult and Laia Costa and the ups and downs in the relationship. Unlike some of the entries in the list, the main focus of the movie is on the story and relationships between characters.

While there are a lot of nude and erotic scenes, they aren’t nearly as explicit as some other movies we mentioned. Still, there are so many of them that it can easily pass as a softcore movie.
